Two weeks turn into six when Herb breaks his ankle in a hotel shower and their return
trip is delayed. What transpires over Amanda's unsupervised six weeks?
"How much trouble can she get into" Gwen asks Herb?
Amanda unintentionally pilfers $1,000,000 from the World Bank over the internet while doing an economics term paper. She promptly turns a $141,000 profit on a stock investment before the World Bank comes looking for their money and the software company comes looking to see how she compromised their new Foolwhistle software 3.2 version newly installed on the World Bank server.
After being forced to return the World Bank's money, Amanda and her classmate and buddy Gordon decide to visit a Las Vegas casino to gamble the remaing $141,000 in her offshore account. She winds up $50,000 in debt to the owner of the Blue Tucan Casino one "Sharky" Stillano.
Sharky has a bigger problem. His casino software is flawed and his whole operation is in disarray. When Amanda and Gordon run from their $50,000 casino debt, Buster, Sharky's main gorilla, drives to Bakersfield and retrieves Amanda. Software specialist Socrates "Sammy" Amii, the author of the Foolwhistle software who has come looking for Amanda is also "invited" along on the ride back to Vegas. Sharky has Sammy look at his software problem. Sammy fixes it.
This thorn now removed, Sharky turns his attention to Amanda. After hearing her story he decides she is "lucky." Sharky finds a positive way to resolve the $50,000 debt and get her "luck" working for him. He puts her in charge of his stock trading account and when she performs well right out of the gate he gives her a "scholarship." He gets her accepted to the U of Las Vegas where he has "clout." She is provided room and board at the casino for four years on an "internship" program.
The story opens and closes four years later as she is writing a final paper for her college english class prior to graduation. The english paper is the procession of the events of the preceding four years. We see the story via a flashback as the english instuctor reads her paper. Amanda squeeks by with a D as the english instuctor finds the story "hardly believable even for fiction."
Later, at the college's graduation ceremony, this english intructor sits slack jawed as he recognizes the characters from the story in attendance and realizes "The Foolwhistle Compromise" wasn't far fetched fiction but true!
