"Last Project ~ Salvation Train" PWD101

Born May 29, 1916 in Lenoir, NC, Carl was born to musical parents and he learned both fiddle and guitar when young. He was active on radio in Lynchburg, VA, in the early '30s. Around 1935, Carl and Johnnie Whisnant moved to Spartanburg, SC, to play in a band called the Lonesome Mountaineers, which became the Rambling Mountaineers. The band performed on radio around the South until Carl left to become a fiddler for Bill Monroe & his Blue Grass Boys in 1942. Monroe hired him to replace fiddler Howdy Forrester who was drafted. In 1943, Carl was drafted too - he joined the Navy.

After service, he restarted the Rambling Mountaineers. They did many Gospel songs and Carl became known as the "Father of Bluegrass Gospel." Hank Williams Sr once wrote a song for Carl & him to sing together "Are You Walking and Talking For the Lord" which they each released on their respective labels. Carl performed, recorded & worked as a disc jockey near his home in Greer, SC, until his death on March 31, 1995. This CD was his "Last Project" recorded and released in 1994. Carl's honors include being inducted into Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 1984; SPBGMA Preservation Hall of Greats in 1988, and the International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of Fame in October 2007.
